How it Happened:
The Golden Eagles Men's Soccer team kicked off the 2023 season with an away win at 2022 GMAC Tournament Champion Ashland University.
Charleston started the match well and went 1-0 up in the first three minutes through a goal by
Stafford Dowling. The early match goal was just the spark that Charleston was looking for to start the 2023 season.
With momentum on their side, the Golden Eagles controlled the next several minutes and around the twenty-minute mark, Charleston went on a ruthless four-minute spell that effectively put the game to bed. The first goal came when
Tristen Rose headed in a
Caio Moraes free kick. Moments later
Joao Belmudes converted a penalty that was won by
Jose Suarez Monaco.
The Golden Eagles headed to the locker room at the half with a 3-0 lead over the Eagles.
Just eight minutes into the second half a costly foul gave Ashland a penalty opportunity. It was Oliver Whaley of the Eagles that put Ashland on the board, now trailing 3-1 to the Golden Eagles. The early second half Ashland goal caused concern for the Golden Eagles, but Charleston kept the Eagles silent for the remained of the match, taking the final 3-1 and picking up their first victory of the 2023 season.
