Location: McConnell Family Stadium
Score: UC 4, GU 1
Records: UC 1-0-1, GU 0-1-1
After their draw with the Kutztown Golden Bears on Thursday, the Golden Eagles were looking for their first win of the season in this matchup. Gannon also was looking to find a win after tying the Concord Mountain Lions just two nights prior, making this an exciting and physical match to watch.
Gannon's defensive tactic of using the offsides trap proved to be quite effective throughout the matchup, as the Golden Eagles were caught offsides three times on through balls that looked ever so perfect. The Golden Knights also had their goalkeeper pressed almost as high as the defensive front, which would end up hurting them in the early stages.
In the 8
th minute, a bad pass to the Gannon keeper would come to the feet of Laura Vierhout who found Juliette Lucas. Lucas would sail the easy chance from long-range into the bottom left corner for the first goal of the night.
The Golden Knights would have to play down a player the remainder of the night after Victoria Martins would receive a red card for hair-pulling just before the end of the half.
The Golden Eagles compiled five shots on goal in the first half, while Gannon could only find two that would both be gathered up by Charleston keeper Jordan Maynard. Charleston would take a 1-0 lead into the halftime break.
Despite conceding a goal in the 49
th minute from Ella Fadale, the Golden Eagles would take control of the game with three consecutive goals; the first of the second half coming from a Laura Vierhout penalty kick that was taken with ease in the 54
th minute.
On a fast break in the 77
th minute, Cassidy Collins would sail a shot into the net from long-distance past the Gannon keeper to extend the lead to two scores.
The final goal of the match would come three minutes later as Juliette Lucas found her second of the night off of Laura Vierhout's third assist to take a 4-1 lead over the Golden Knights.
Charleston would hang onto their lead for the remaining 10 minutes to earn their first victory under first-year head coach Gary Ogilvie.
