Golden Eagles Crowned Mountain East Conference Tournament Champions

Charleston, W.Va. - The University of Charleston Golden Eagles welcomed Concord to the Welch Athletic Complex on Sunday afternoon for the final of the Mountain East Conference Tournament.

The Basics:
Location: Welch Athletic Complex
Score: UC 3, Concord
Records: UC 18-1-1 (13-1-0 MEC), Concord 15-3-2 (11-1-2 MEC)

How it Happened:
The hosts got off to a flyer as Jose Suarez Monaco got on the end of a whipped Franco Tradatti cross from the left hand side in the ninth minute to head home and give Charleston the lead. They would have six shots in total in the first half, forcing the Mountain Lions keeper into three saves. In contrast, Konstantinos Parisis was only needed once before the break.

Into the second half and, like all finals, the intensity was building. In the 60th minute, Joao Silva played the ball to Joao Belmudes who cut inside from the right and laced a strike into the bottom right hand corner to give the Golden Eagles a 2-0 cushion. Just two minutes later, Belmudes had his second and Charleston's third. Ethan Zarka dribbled down the left hand side and his cross was blocked by a Concord hand, leaving the referee no choice but to point to the spot. Belmudes stepped up and sent the keeper the wrong way to put the Golden Eagles three up. The Mountain Lions were able to grab a consolation in the 69th minute to set up an interesting last twenty minutes of the contest, but Charleston held out to win yet another Mountain East Conference tournament.
