Erie, Pa. – The University of Charleston Golden Eagles traveled to Gannon University for round one of the NCAA Division II National Tournament this past Thursday for a match up against Kutztown.
The Basics:
Location: McConnell Family Stadium
Score: UC 1, KU 2
Records: UC 16-6 (13-2 MEC), Kutztown 12-4-6 (7-3-6 PSAC)
How it Happened:
Just nine minutes in, Kutztown took the lead through Caroline McDonald. Curtis Bridget and Katelyn Economopolous combined from a corner and McDonald was there to tap home. However, their lead didn't last long. Frankie Morrow, wearing the armband for the Golden Eagles, equalized five minutes later from a Kim Smal assist. The scoreboard wasn't finalized though, as Economopolous was involved again from another corner in the 32nd minute. She whipped a ball onto the head of Bridget Curtis who looped a header over the head of Jordan Maynard in the UC goal. UC were unable to muster another equalizer before the 90 minutes were up, and so Kutztown were the victors and will move into the second round of the tournament.
The Golden Eagles finish the season with an impressive 16-6 record in coach Sarah Leiby's first season at the helm, as well as a second consecutive appearance in the National Tournament.
