CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The University of Charleston women's basketball team kicked off their 2024 season with a hard-fought 83-78 victory over Shepherd University on Saturday at the Wehrle Innovation Center. The win also marked the first career victory for head coach Bubby Johnson.
Freshman forward Harper Annarino had a standout debut, recording a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Paris Stokes led all scorers with 24 points, going 14-for-16 from the free-throw line, while Kiara Cruz added 15 points, including two key three-pointers.

How it Happened:
Charleston opened the game with a strong first quarter, outscoring Shepherd 23-20 behind sharp shooting from beyond the arc. Annarino made her presence felt early, grabbing key rebounds to help the Golden Eagles establish their rhythm.
In the second quarter, Charleston extended their lead with balanced scoring and tight defense, heading into halftime up 44-34. Stokes dominated the paint, scoring seven points in the frame.
Shepherd mounted a comeback in the third quarter, outscoring Charleston 27-21, but timely baskets from Cruz and Stokes helped the Golden Eagles maintain a narrow lead going into the final period.
The fourth quarter saw Charleston hold off a late Shepherd rally. Annarino and Cruz each hit critical free throws down the stretch, sealing the Golden Eagles' 83-78 win.
