Golden Eagles Send Reigning National Champions Crashing Out

Charleston, W.Va. - The University of Charleston Golden Eagles welcomed Franklin Pierce to the Welch Athletic Complex this past Sunday in the sweet sixteen of the Division II National Tournament.

The Basics:
Location: Welch Athletic Complex
Score: UC 1, FP 0
Records: UC 20-1-1 (13-1-0 MEC), Franklin Pierce 12-3-5 (4-1-4 NE10)

How it Happened:
A large crowd was in attendance as the community came out to watch the Golden Eagles battle it out against last year's National Champions led by former UC assistant coach Travis Brent. The Ravens had an early opportunity to open the scoring from a corner but headed just wide. Konstantinos Parisis was called into action just once in the first half in the UC net, whilst The Golden Eagles attack managed to have ten shots in the first 45 with five testing the keeper. Caio Moraes came closest from a free kick which got a deflection and Karl Vernet then tipped over. As the half time whistle went, the scoreline read 0-0, with Charleston on top.

Into the second half and it was the Ravens who came out the quicker of the two sides, having the first two shots of the second half with one forcing Parisis to make a save. However, it was the Golden Eagles that gone on the board first. Jack Kay got a block on a Ravens clearance, and then a second was intercepted by Moraes before he fired a left footed effort from outside the area towards goal. The strike was far too powerful for Karl Vernet in goal and the ball whistled into the back of the net, sending the WAC into bedlam. Franklin Pierce tried their utmost to get back into the game and save their season, but a solid Golden Eagles defense stood firm to keep another clean sheet, booking their place in the elite eight, and ensuring there will be a new National Champion crowned in North Carolina.

Up Next:
The Golden Eagles will now move into the elite eight, hosting Felician this coming Saturday December 7th at the Welch Athletic Complex. Kick off is scheduled for 3pm.
