Golden Eagles Outscore Griffins 18-6 for the Sweep

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – No. 19 University of Charleston Softball (4-0) defeats Seton Hill University (6-2) 4-1 in game one and mercy rules them 14-5 in come-from-behind fashion in game two. The Golden Eagles put on an offensive show in the doubleheader with 19 hits, seven doubles, a home run, nine walks and two stolen bases.

UC's offense was led by Hannah Meyer and Hannah Rose. Meyer went 3-7 (.429) on the day with a go-ahead home run, three runs-batted-in and two runs scored, while Rose went 3-6 (.500) with a double, three runs scored, two runs-batted-in, two stolen bases and a walk. Isabella Andujar and Allysa Lake also played key roles in today's wins. Andujar hit .600 (3-5) against the Griffins with two doubles, two runs-batted-in, two runs scored and two walks. Like her teammate, Lake went 3-5 (.600) with two doubles, a run-batted-in, a run scored, two walks and a hit-by-pitch.

Senior Brianna McCown (3-0) was the standout pitcher for the Golden Eagles with eight strikeouts, no walks and just four hits and one run allowed in 8.1 innings pitched.

The Basics:
Location: Charleston, W.Va.
Score: G1: 4-1 (UCWV); G2: 14-5 (UCWV)

How it Happened:
Game One: 4-1 (UCWV)
The Griffins went three-up, three-down to start the game after McCown struck out two and induced a pop fly to shortstop. The bottom half of the inning proved to be a different story for Charleston with Rose leading it off with a walk. With one out, she eventually stole second base to put herself in scoring position. Lake went on to plate Rose on a double to put the Golden Eagles up 1-0. From there Seton Hill managed to secure their second out, but a wild pitch moved Lake up to third who later scored on a double by Senior Lindsey Phares. Two runs were all they were able to get though, as the Griffins stopped the bleeding.

Seton Hill also went one, two, three in the second inning. On the flip side, UC continued to build their momentum with Morgan Hoppe doubling to send Allison Rubal home who reached on an error by the shortstop to lead off the inning. With one out, Rose placed a bunt perfectly down the third base line for a single. On the same play, the senior rounded first and induced a rundown to buy Hoppe enough time to score the fourth run of the game for the Golden Eagles to put them ahead 4-0. The inning ended on a flyout to left field.

SHU notched their first hit of the game on a single to shortstop to leadoff the third frame. The Griffins could not find the extra strength they needed to push across a run though. McCown sent the next three batters packing on a flyout, strikeout and a groundout to put another zero on the board for Seton Hill.

The bats went cold for the Golden Eagles after the second inning, and not much action happened from there on until the top of the fifth inning. A Griffin popped up to McCown to leadoff, but Grace Paredes took a pitch yard to put an end to the shutout. The veteran pitcher shook it off though, holding Seton Hill to just the one run scored to give Charleston their third victory of the season.

Game Two: 14-5 (UCWV)
Both teams put on an offensive show in the second game of the day, but Charleston came out on top. The Griffins scored first on a single to left field after they loaded the bases on two hits and a hit-by pitch in the first. Starting pitcher Addison Mass held them to just the one run though after she drew a line out and a strikeout swinging for the third out.

In UC's half of the first, Meyer loaded the bases on a single to left center after Andujar and Lake reached on a double and a hit-by-pitch with one out. A walk by Bianca evened the score at one, and a single up the middle by Kayla Moran notched two more runs for Charleston to wrap up the scoring for the inning.

Seton Hill cut the deficit back down to one in the second inning following a pair of singles and a fielder's choice. The Golden Eagles were held scoreless in the second. The Griffins turned up the heat in the third, collecting another pair of runs on a solo shot and double to go-ahead 4-3. Like the second, Charleston was held scoreless in the third after they went down in order on a ground out, a fly out and a line out.

Things continued to get shaky for UC in the fourth, as SHU notched another run on a double by Paredes. With one out the Golden Eagles gave out a free pass via the walk, which led to another stolen base. The runner managed to also advance to third on a loose ball following the throw down. She later scored on a slow groundout to second to make the score 5-3.

It quickly turned around for Charleston though in the bottom half after Kyra Gooler led off with a single up the middle. A sacrifice bunt by Kaleigh Serra put Gooler in scoring position who went on to cross home plate on a double by Andujar to knot it at five. Meyer broke it open on a three-run moonshot over the left field fence to give UC the 8-5 advantage. A trio of walks, a bunt single by Moran, a two-run single by Serra and a two-run double by Rose rounded out the scoring for the game at 14-5.

Despite allowing a lead off hit up the middle, game one's starting pitcher for Charleston, McCown, finalized the mercy rule victory in the top of the fifth after drawing a ground out, a fly out and her eighth strikeout of the day.
