The Basics:
Location: Clermont, FL
Score: Game One-5-1 (UCWV); Game Two-13-0 (UCWV)
How it Happened:
Game One- 5-1 (UCWV)
Mass sent the Marauders down in order with a pair of pop ups and a fly out to centerfield to start the game off on the right foot for the Golden Eagles. Wasting no time at the plate, Rose turned on her wheels and tripled to lead off Charleston's half of the inning. Andujar stepped up to the plate next and blasted one off the scoreboard to give UC an early 2-0 lead. Despite the hot start, Mary managed to get out of the jam and hold the Golden Eagles to just the two runs scored.
The scoring continued for Charleston in the second inning after a single by
Brittny Ogg plated
Allison Rubal, who previously got on base via a double. Rose followed up Ogg's double with one of her own, knocking in another run before the Marauders secured their third out on a ground ball to the shortstop.
UC pushed across one more run in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Bianca Polistina started it off with a single but was caught stealing second to put an out up for MU. Rubal went on to walk and advance to second on a ground out to second base. With two outs, the junior scored on a single before Rose was picked off at first by the shortstop to conclude the inning.
Mary closed out the scoring for both teams in the top of the fifth. They led off the inning with a single and double to pick up their first and only run of the game. The game did not see another player on base until a hit-by-pitch and a single put the Marauders in scoring position in the top half of the seventh inning. Their last stitch efforts to pick up runs fell through though, as a fly out, a ground out and a strikeout handed the Golden Eagles their seventh victory of the season.
Game Two-
The Golden Eagles continued to stand on business in the second game of the day, but this time against the University of Findlay. A pair of free bases by means of a hit-by-pitch and a walk started it off for Charleston who was the visiting team. A three-run long ball by Lake quickly gave UC a three-run cushion, but that was all they were able to get despite
Raegan West singling with no outs following the homer. With two gone, the Oilers also put a runner in scoring position in the first, however, McCown struck out the next batter to put an end to the inning.
With one out in the second, Rose hammered the ball to center field, but as it was tailing, it tipped off the center fielder's glove which was scored an error. Once again, the senior sent it into overdrive on the same play, coming all the way home on a throwing miscue by the second baseman to make the score 4-0. FU closed out the frame after doubling up a golden eagle at first on a pop fly to second. McCown abruptly put an end to the inning on three straight punch outs.
The Golden Eagles lit up in the top of the fourth. To start it off, Rubal reached first on an error by the third baseman, then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Lindsey Phares and then advanced to third on a wild pitch to put her 60 feet away from scoring another run. A double to left center by Ogg knocked Rubal in and sparked UC's offense. Rose reached first on another free pass given out by the Oiler's pitching staff, and a single to left field by Andujar scored Ogg and put runners on first and second with the hot-hitting Lake stepping up to the plate. She went on to collect another hit and notch another RBI on ball smacked to the third basemen. The Golden Eagles collected their last two runs of the frame on a ball hit through the left side by Polistina, which scored Andujar and pinch runner Kaleigh Serra.
McCown continued to shutout Findlay, while the Charleston offense continued to tally runs in the fifth. Phares singled to the shortstop to begin the inning. Ogg then bunted, reached first, advanced to second and scored pinch runner
Isabella Landrum on a throwing error by the pitcher. A wild pitch, a walk, stolen base by Rose and a hit-by-pitch then loaded the bases for UC. A double off the bat of Lake made the score 13-0 before the Oilers collected three straight outs to end the inning.
Despite leading the bottom of the fifth inning off with a walk, Findlay was unable score. Two pop outs and a fielder's choice secured the Golden Eagles the 13-0 win and their third mercy rule victory of the early season.
