Freshman Layla Jelenic Twirls a Perfect Game, UC Sweeps WU & WLU

CHARLESTON, W.VA.— No.15 University of Charleston Softball (22-1, 6-0 MEC) remains perfect in conference play with doubleheader sweeps over Wheeling University (4-26, 0-8 MEC) and West Liberty University (10-16, 5-3 MEC).

Freshman Layla Jelenic turned in a perfect game with ten strikeouts on Saturday in game two versus the Cardinals. Opponents are only hitting .036 off Jelenic (2-0), as she has only allowed two hits in 61 batters faced and 18 innings pitched. Senior Brianna McCown and Junior Chloe Elliott also snagged wins this weekend with McCown tallying two and Elliott snagging one.

Offensively, Hannah Rose led the Golden Eagles with six hits in 11 at-bats with three home runs, a double, three RBIs, a stolen base, a walk and a hit-by-pitch. Two of her home runs came back-to-back in the first win over Wheeling after leading off with a bomb over the center field fence.

Summary:
Game One vs. Wheeling: 9-1 (UCWV)
The Golden Eagles put on a hitting clinic in game one against the Cardinals. Rose started it off for UC with a blast over the center field fence in the bottom half of the first. Charleston continued to pour it on, as a Hannah Meyer double, an Allison Rubal single and a ground out by Morgan Hoppe put three more runs on the board before Wheeling managed to get out of the inning.

McCown went on to retire the side to hand the bats back over to her teammates. With one out, Rose got ahold of another pitch, driving it deep to tally another run for UC. Junior Isabella Andujar, the MEC home run leader last year, then went on to do the same to quickly make the score 6-0. Graduate Student Allysa Lake picked up a single to put herself on base with one out. Pinch runner Lindsey Reavis then swiped her seventh bag of the season to put herself in scoring position before Lindsey Phares drew a walk to put two runners on for UC. Another single by Rubal drove home the seventh run of the game, but the Cardinals threw Phares out at third to end the rally.

The first and only run of the ballgame for the Cardinals came in the top of the third inning. McCown quickly sent the first two batters of the inning packing on a groundout and a strikeout looking, but a string of three singles plated a run. That is all they were able to get though, as McCown struck out a Cardinal swinging for the final out. Despite a single by Morgan Hoppe and a walk by Rose, the Golden Eagles were held scoreless in the third inning.

After another shutdown inning by McCown, Lake got the bats going again for UC with another solo shot to lead off the bottom of the fourth inning. A pair of errors by the Cardinals, a walk to load the bases and a wild pitch plated the final run of the game. With the score at 9-1, Charleston secured their seventh mercy rule victory of the year.

McCown improved to 13-1 with five strikeouts and only three hits and one run allowed in five innings pitched.

Game Two vs. Wheeling: 7-0 (UCWV)
Freshman Jelenic was outstanding in the circle for Charleston. The San Pedro, California native got her third start of her early career after previously throwing a one-hitter in Clermont, Florida at The Spring Games tournament. She continued her dominate play versus the Cardinals, as she was perfect through seven innings of work with ten strikeouts to secure the 7-0 victory. In 18 innings pitched, opponents are just 2-55 (.036) against Jelenic.

The Golden Eagles continued their hot hitting into game two, as a double by Andujar plated the first run in the first frame of the game. They were held scoreless in the second, but Lake drilled her second home run of the game in third with one out to add onto their lead. Two pop flies put an end to the scoring though.

Junior Kyra Gooler's first big fly of the season came in the bottom of the fourth, which plated two more runs for Charleston, as Rubal knocked another single to lead it off. The Golden Eagles did not score again until the bottom of the fifth, following a sacrifice fly by Meyer that plated a run and put two runners into scoring position. Rubal then went on to hit into a fielder's choice, scoring another run for UC. The Golden Eagles finalized the score in style, as Rose hit her third cannon shot of the day to make the score 7-0, Charleston.

Game One vs. West Liberty: 4-2 (UCWV)
Things started off shaky for the Golden Eagles in the first frame of the game after the Hilltoppers loaded the bases with no outs on a double and a pair of fielder's choices. McCown secured the first out via the strikeout. She then induced a groundball where third basemen Brittny Ogg nailed the runner out at home to keep the score at zero. A pop fly to Meyer at home is how the inning ended.

Charleston scored first against the Hilltoppers in the bottom of the first inning. Rose led off with a single, but a line-out by Andujar doubled her up to quickly put two outs on the board for West Liberty. The Golden Eagles still managed to plate a run though, following a double by Lake and a single by Phares.

The Golden Eagles did not score again until the bottom of the third. With one out, Rose doubled and Andujar singled to put runners on the corners with one out. Pinch runner Reavis captured her second stolen base of the weekend to put two runners in scoring position for Lake and Phares. Rose crossed home plate on another grounder, while Reavis scored on scored on a knock by Phares.

Since the first inning, McCown held the Hilltoppers to zero runs, but they managed to break through in the fourth on three singles and a fielder's choice. The game continued to stay within one run before a walk, a Bianca Polistina and a Phares single stretched Charleston's lead to two. The Hilltoppers could not produce in the seventh, handing the Golden Eagles the 4-2 victory.

Game Two vs. West Liberty: 1-0 (UCWV)
The final game of the weekend was a pitching duel. The Hilltoppers managed to only pick up four knocks against UC's Chloe Elliott who allowed no free passes and punched out four. The Golden Eagles on the other hand put up nine hits, but they left 11 on base. The first and last run of the game did not come until the bottom of the seventh when Lake blasted a leadoff homer to walk it off.
