How it Happened:
Vs. Frostburg (Friday):
The Golden Eagles started the weekend off with a loss, only their third of the season. Despite out hitting the Bobcats 9-8, they were unable to secure the win. The Golden Eagles led most of the way with the first three runs of the game coming in the first and second inning. However, Frostburg scored one run in the fourth inning and lit up in the fifth, putting three runs up on a sacrifice fly, an error and a double to right center to give them the 6-4 lead. They added another in the sixth inning and held Charleston scoreless in the seventh to get the victory. Brianna McCown was credited with the loss.
Charleston was more like themselves in game two. The Golden Eagles had 11 knocks compared to the Bobcats' five, which helped them secure their 40
th win of the season by a score of 8-3. They tallied five runs in the first inning on a Phares single, a Bianca Polistina sacrifice fly, a Hannah Meyer two-run blast and a passed ball. UC scored a run on a double off the bat of Brittny Ogg in the fifth and closed out the scoring on a double off the bat of Kyra Gooler in the seventh. The Bobcats' three runs came in the first, third and sixth inning on a single, an error and a sacrifice fly. Chloe Elliott (8-0) got the win with four strikeouts in six innings of work. Sophomore Addison Mass relieved Elliott in the seventh, allowing no hits, runs or free passes.
Vs. Fairmont (Sunday):
Just like their series on Friday, Charleston uncharacteristically dropped game one of the doubleheader match up to Fairmont State. The Golden Eagles could only muster up two hits against the Fighting Falcons. The first run of the game came via a solo shot off the bat of a Fighting Falcon in the third inning. With bases loaded in the fifth, Charleston knotted the score at one after Andujar drew a walk to plate the first run for the Golden Eagles. It was to no avail though, as Fairmont walked it off on a single through the three-four hole to give them the 2-1 win. Brianna McCown was also credited with the loss for this game.
The Golden Eagles woke up the bats in game two versus the Fighting Falcons, as they out hit them 14-6. Andujar started the game off with a bang with a two-run blast to right center in the first and another in the second. Meyer followed Andujar's lead after she knocked one off the foul pole to put Charleston ahead by a mile. The Fighting Falcons eventually added to their score column in the third with a home run of their own, but Andujar responded by driving another one out of the park for her third home run of the day. A Allison Rubal sacrifice fly added another run for UC before FSU plated their second and final run of the game on a sacrifice fly. A single by Andujar in the fifth and a two-run homer by Lake closed out the scoring and solidified the 11-2 win over the Fighting Falcons.
Elliott started in the circle for the Golden Eagles. In 3.1 innings of work, the junior struck out two Fighting Falcons and allowed two runs on four hits and a walk. Mass took over in the fourth inning. In 3.2 innings pitched, she tallied two strikeouts and only allowed one walk and two hits. She was credited with the victory.
