Golden Eagles Outlast Yellow Jackets in Nail-Biting 71-69 Victory

Institute, W.Va. — The University of Charleston women's basketball team held on for a thrilling 71-69 victory over the West Virginia State Yellow Jackets in Mountain East Conference action Saturday afternoon at the Walker Convocation Center.

How it Happened
Charleston (11-7, 7-4 MEC) was led by Jamia Nesmith, who notched a near double-double with 18 points and nine rebounds, and Sydney Bolles, who added 17 points and five rebounds. Kiley Graham also played a pivotal role, scoring 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting, including four three-pointers.

  • First Quarter: The Golden Eagles set the tone early, shooting 53.3% from the field to take a 19-13 lead. Bolles and Graham combined for key baskets to give Charleston early momentum.
  • Second Quarter: Charleston maintained control with balanced scoring and strong defense, extending their lead to 36-26 by halftime. Nesmith's inside presence and Graham's sharp shooting helped the Golden Eagles hold off a Yellow Jacket push.
  • Third Quarter: West Virginia State found their rhythm, outscoring Charleston 22-14 in the frame to cut the lead to two points. Despite the Yellow Jackets' surge, Bolles provided crucial baskets to keep the Golden Eagles ahead, 50-48.
  • Fourth Quarter: In a tense final period, Charleston capitalized on free throws and defensive stops. Nesmith's layups and Bolles' clutch free throw in the final seconds sealed the win, as Charleston narrowly edged out West Virginia State. 

Charleston outshot West Virginia State 43.1% to 29.8% from the field but struggled from beyond the arc, hitting 25.9% of their three-pointers compared to the Yellow Jackets' 24.1%. The Golden Eagles held a 50-52 deficit in rebounds but excelled at converting second-chance points, finishing with 15.

The Golden Eagles will look to build on their momentum as they travel to Wheeling to face the Cardinals on Wednesday, Jan. 29. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. at the Alma Grace McDonough Gym.
