Charleston Falls in Triple Overtime Battle to Frostburg State

Charleston, W.Va.— In a dramatic home contest at the University of Charleston Stadium, the Golden Eagles battled Frostburg State through multiple overtimes before narrowly falling 32–30 on Saturday afternoon, Oct. 18. The matchup was a physical back-and-forth game that came down to the final moments in triple overtime.

The Basics:
Location: University of Charleston Stadium
Score: Frostburg State 32, Charleston 30 (3OT)
Records: Frostburg State 6–1 (4–1 MEC); Charleston 4–3 (3–1 MEC)
How it Happened:
Charleston struck first midway through the opening quarter when Justin McDuffie capped a 12-play, 72-yard drive with an 8-yard rushing touchdown to give UC a 7–0 lead. Frostburg responded before the end of the quarter on a 21-yard touchdown pass from Jordan Brooks to Jevonn Gilyard, tying the score 7–7.

The Golden Eagles reclaimed momentum in the second quarter behind a balanced drive that ended with a 22-yard field goal by Gryffin Mitstifer, pushing Charleston ahead 10–7. UC's defense continued to frustrate Frostburg throughout the first half, highlighted by an interception from Montel Campbell and a fumble recovery by John Clifford Jr. that kept the Bobcats off the board until halftime.

The second half saw both teams exchange big plays. Frostburg opened the third quarter with a 70-yard touchdown pass to take the lead 14–10, but Charleston immediately answered with another long drive capped by a 5-yard rushing touchdown from quarterback Ean Hamric to regain the advantage at 17–14.

The fourth quarter was a battle of attrition. Frostburg tied the game at 17–17 with a 21-yard field goal before UC answered with a 10-yard touchdown run from Jaylen Butera, reclaiming the lead 24–17. The Bobcats forced overtime after a late touchdown pass tied the score 24–24 in the closing minutes.

In the first overtime, Frostburg converted a 25-yard touchdown pass before Charleston matched with a 14-yard scoring strike from Hamric to Devin Hobbs, knotting the game again at 30–30. A missed field goal by UC in the next overtime opened the door for Frostburg, which capitalized with a short completion to edge Charleston 32–30 in triple overtime.

Charleston's offense produced 371 total yards, including 233 on the ground. Hamric led the way with 100 rushing yards and a touchdown while completing 15 of 27 passes for 138 yards and a score. Butera added 42 rushing yards and a touchdown, with McDuffie contributing another on the ground. Caleb Barringer paced UC receivers with 56 yards on five catches, while Hobbs' lone touchdown reception came in a pivotal overtime moment.

Defensively, Denoris Wardlow and Anthony Bolden II each recorded five total tackles, while Clifford Jr. added a sack and a fumble recovery. Montel Campbell recorded both a sack and an interception, leading a defense that kept UC in position throughout the marathon contest.
Charleston will look to bounce back next week and continue building on the competitive performances that have kept them in every conference matchup this season.
