Golden Eagles Secure 2-0 Win Over Glenville State

Charleston, W.Va. – In a high-stakes conference matchup under steady rain, the University of Charleston women's soccer team battled to a decisive 2-0 victory over Glenville State on Wednesday evening at Welch Athletic Complex. The win secured three crucial points in the Mountain East Conference standings.

The Basics
  • Location: Welch Athletic Complex
  • Final Score: UC 2, GSU 0
  • Records: Charleston (7-6-3, 6-4-3 MEC), Glenville State (6-9-1, 5-7-1 MEC)
How It Happened
The Golden Eagles entered the match just two points ahead of Glenville State in the MEC standings and looked to complete the season sweep after a 1-0 win in their previous meeting.

Both teams battled through difficult conditions in the first half, with heavy rain limiting clear chances. Charleston recorded three early shots to Glenville's one, but neither side found a breakthrough. Glenville's best look came in the 31st minute off a free kick that was headed just over the bar, while UC goalkeeper Ines Degli Esposti made a key save on a low left shot moments later to keep the score level. The teams went into halftime deadlocked at 0-0.

Charleston came out of the break energized. Ten minutes into the second half, Ciara Casamento delivered a pinpoint corner kick to the near post, where Jamie Bland headed it home to give UC a 1-0 lead. The Golden Eagles' back line, anchored by Rothmann, Freese, and Goes, continued to hold firm, stifling the Pioneers' attack. In the 78th minute, Mya Mills broke down the right flank after a through ball from Ava Bourne and was taken down in the box. Linsey Hackney confidently converted the ensuing penalty, firing into the top-left corner to double UC's advantage.

Charleston controlled the closing minutes to seal the 2-0 victory, strengthening its grip on third place in the MEC standings with 21 points, five clear of both West Virginia Wesleyan and Glenville State.
