Charleston, W.Va. - The #1 ranked University of Charleston Golden Eagles welcome Davis & Elkins this past Wednesday for the semi final of the Mountain East Conference Tournament.
The Basics:
Location:Welch Athletic Complex
Score: UC 02 D&E 0
Records: Charleston 15-0-4 (11-0-3 MEC) Davis & Elkins 8-7-4 (6-5-3 MEC)
How it Happened:
The first chance of the game fell early to Paul Hoste in the fifth minute from a Leo Dutra corner, but he could only head wide, and then three minutes later Jack Allan found himself with a free header in the D&E area but like Hoste's effort he directed it wide. Down the other end, the Senators' first and only chance of the half was comfortably saved by Konstantinos Parisis in the Golden Eagles goal thirteen minutes in. The breakthrough came midway through the first half as intricate play between Leo Dutra, Caio Moraes, and Martin Echarren freed Moraes inside the penalty area and he stabbed home through the legs of the onrushing Senators keeper to fire Charleston in front. Sam Newell and Tomas Petrungaro had chances late in the half but couldn't convert, and the scoreline stayed a 1-0 going into the interval.
Into the second half and the first chance after the restart was for the Senators as McKenzie Mason was deemed to have fouled just outside the area. Hugo Fauli stepped up and whipped it over the wall, but Parisis was there to palm the effort away well. Charleston had to wait until the sixty-ninth minute for their first effort in the second half, but Petrungaro could only hit it down the keeper's throat from twenty yards after cutting inside from the left. A few minutes later, Petrungaro was played through by a Moraes back heel, but his shot was smothered by the keeper. The resulting corner however was swung in onto the head of McKenzie Mason and his header was saved brilliantly by Phillips in goal, but Mattia Marini was on hand to convert the rebound to put Charleston two to the good. Martin Echarren had a chance for a third with twenty seconds to go after a driving run but couldn't put his effort on target.
