Charleston, W.Va. - The University of Charleston welcomed Adelphi to the Welch Athletic Complex this past Sunday for round two of the NCAA Division II National Tournament.
The Basics:
Location:Welch Athletic Complex
Score: UC 2, AU 0
Records: Charleston 17-0-4 (11-0-3 MEC) Adelphi 9-6-4
How it Happened:
The Golden Eagles started the livelier of the two sides, with Franco Tradatti going on a marauding run early on and playing a one two with Sam Newell before giving Andrea Farinella a comfortable save. Martin Echarren smashed over when the ball dropped to him eight yards out, and then Sam Newell gave Farinella a strong effort to deal with, with his reflexes helping him palm wide for a corner. Chances were few and far between for the next twenty five minutes, until Adelphi created their first opportunity of the game. An attacker was released down the left hand side, cut inside, and Jack Allan dove head first to send a goalward effort out for a corner. Two minutes later, Sam Nolan hit the bar with a free kick for the visitors, before Tomas Petrungaro had an effort comfortably saved down the other end. Charleston had one more chance before the break but Joao Silva couldn't capitalize as the ball dropped to him at the back post, sending it over.
Into the second half and Martin Echarren was slipped in by Tomas Muller within two minutes of the restart, but Farinella was there again to thwart him. Australian Jack Allan then had a sighter from twenty five yards but it was easy work for the man between the sticks. Adelphi's biggest chance of the game came in the 57th minute as good work down the right hand side and a low cross towards the back post fell to Sam Nolan, but an on rushing Konstantinos Parisis was on hand to make a fantastic save down low. Caio Moraes then hit a free kick onto the top of the Adelphi net, before Charleston eventually got the breakthrough in the 78th minute. Jack Allan galloped into the midfield with the ball and just kept on going before finding Allan Logrillo just outside the Adelphi area. Logrillo's touch took him into the box and he slotted home to fire UC into the lead. Three minutes later, Samuel Montes won the race for a loose ball inside his own half and drove deep into Adelphi's down the left hand side before slipping in Petrungaro, and his cross was tapped home by Martin Echarren to all but seal the contest for the Golden Eagles and send them dancing into the next round.
