Charleston, W.Va. - The University of Charleston Golden Eagles welcomed Concord to the WAC this past Wednesday for their final MEC regular season game of the season, having already wrapped up the title earlier in the week.
The Basics:
Location:Welch Athletic Complex
Score: UC 0, CU 0
Records: Charleston 14-0-4 (11-0-3 MEC) Concord 12-3-3 (10-3-1 MEC)
How it Happened:
The first real big chance of the game came in the ninth minute when the Mountain Lions were awarded a free kick around 25 yards from goal. Malher Santi Possu stepped up and his strike hit the outside of Konstantinos Parisis' left hand post on its way out for a goal kick. It was a real spicy affair with tackles flying in from both sides, and Charleston had a huge penalty shout waved away shortly after as Joao Silva looked to be clattered inside the Concord area but the referee waved it away. Around 10 minutes before the break, Charleston thought they'd taken the lead through Leonardo Dutra, but the referee saw something in the build up and instead awarded a free kick the other way, disallowing it. Going into half time, there was no breakthrough.
Into the second half and the intensity was still red hot, with both teams picking up numerous cautions. The Mountain Lions were looking dangerous on the counter, and Parisis thwarted an effort down Charleston's left hand side, whilst Denys Verbinskyi looped a header onto the roof of the net down the other end. Clear cut chances were few and far between, with neither side establishing real dominance in the second period. A couple of half chances fell to Dutra but he couldn't convert, and Sam Newell's free kick in the dying embers didn't trouble the Mountain Lions keeper. The game finished as a stalemate with Concord the happier of the two sides, but with the tie UC completed their first undefeated regular season since 2018.
