Charleston, W.Va.- The University of Charleston Golden Eagles welcomed Shawnee State University to the WAC this past Sunday for a Mountain East Conference matchup.
The Basics:
Location: Welch Athletic Complex
Score: UC 3, SSU 1
Records: Charleston 12-2-0 (9-1-0 MEC) Shawnee State 3-10-2 (2-8-1 MEC)
How it Happened:
The Golden Eagles started well and had a number of chances early on, but failed to capitalize through the likes of Martin Echarren, Yigit Kilic, and Jose Suarez Monaco. They were made to pay for those squandered chances, as Murilo Teixeira Cardozo jumped on a loose touch in midfield from Charleston and finished well past a helpless Curro Rodriguez. In the 36th minute, Tomas Petrungaro equalized as Samuel Marquez's pass was taken down expertly by Suarez Monaco into the path of Petrungaro, and his first time strike found the bottom corner. The scores were level at the break.
Into the second half and Petrungaro double his tally in the 51st minute. Marquez was again involved as his clipped pass over the top of the Bears' defence found Petrungaro who once again made no mistake to put the Golden Eagles into the lead. A flurry of chances followed for Charleston the put the game to bed, and they finally did in the 82nd minute as Turk Yigit Kilic leapt highest to head home a Samuel Márquez corner. The Golden Eagles came away with the three points and a 3-1 victory.
Up Next:
Next up for the Golden Eagles is the visit of Salem University this Wednesday, October 21st. The game will also act as a celebration of the Golden Eagles seniors, who will walk out with friends and family prior to kick off at 4pm.
