Frostburg, Md.- The University of Charleston Golden Eagles made the trip to Frostburg State this past Wednesday for their final MEC regular season matchup.
The Basics:
Location: Bobcat Stadium
Score: UC 1, FSU 0
Records: Charleston 15-2-0 (12-1-0 MEC) Frostburg State 7-4-6 (5-4-4 MEC)
How it Happened:
The Golden Eagles started well, moving the ball freely against an astute Frostburg defence. Chances fell to Tomas Petrungaro and Yigit Kilic early, as well as Caio Moraes, but only one made the Bobcats keeper work in the first 45. Down the other end, Luka Felix in the Golden Eagles net had little to do before the break.
Into the second half and it was this time the Bobcats that looked the more threatening early on, with their attack having pace to burn on the counterattack. The game overall had very few clear-cut chances, and Frostburg made the MEC South Champions work throughout. Eventually, with less than two minutes left on the clock, the Golden Eagles struck. Caio Moraes drifted a free kick into the area and Martin Echarren leapt highest to convert over a helpless Bobcats keeper, sending Charleston into a frenzy. They held out for the final 100 seconds of the game to record a 1-0 victory and finish the season top of the South Division, and with the most points across the whole MEC. Their regular season record finishes as 15-2 (12-1 MEC), and they'll receive a bye into the semi-finals of the conference tournament.
Up Next:
Up next for the Golden Eagles will be the visit of either #2N Frostburg State or #3S Salem in the MEC tournament semi-finals on Wednesday November 4, as the two battle it out for that opportunity this Sunday.
