VIERA, Fla. — The University of Charleston softball team split its opening day at the Space Coast Spring Games on Tuesday afternoon, falling 5–4 to Tiffin before bouncing back with a 4–0 win over Bridgeport at the USSSA Space Coast Complex.
Game One
The Basics:
Location: USSSA Space Coast Complex | Viera, Fla.
Score: Tiffin 5, Charleston 4
Records: Charleston 8–7 (0–0 MEC), Tiffin 7–4 (0–0 GMAC)
How It Happened:
Tiffin jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first inning with a two-run home run to make it 2–0.
Charleston responded immediately in the bottom half of the inning. Bianca Polistina and Kayla Moran opened the frame with singles before Taylor Hodson reached on an error that allowed Polistina to score. Cali Masters followed with a sacrifice fly to center field that brought Moran home, tying the game at 2–2 after the first inning.
Both teams were held scoreless over the next three innings as the game remained tied heading into the fifth.
In the top of the fifth inning, Tiffin regained the lead with a three-run home run to move ahead 5–2.
Charleston answered in the bottom of the inning. Ella Zucchero singled and Taylor Hodson reached base before Cali Masters delivered a two-RBI single that scored both runners and cut the deficit to 5–4.
The Golden Eagles threatened again in the sixth inning when Aubriana Espinoza singled and stole second to move into scoring position, but the tying run was left stranded.
Charleston was unable to generate another rally in the seventh inning as Tiffin held on for the one-run victory.
Game 2

Score: Charleston 4, Bridgeport 0
Records: Charleston 9–7 (0–0 MEC), Bridgeport 5–4 (0–0 ECC)
How It Happened:
Charleston opened the scoring in the first inning. Bianca Polistina reached base and later stole home to give the Golden Eagles a 1–0 lead.
In the second inning, the Golden Eagles added to the advantage. Maya Hataway reached base and moved into scoring position before Kaleigh Serra doubled to center field to drive in a run and make it 2–0. Ella Zucchero followed with an RBI single to right field that scored Serra and pushed the Charleston lead to 3–0.
Charleston extended the lead in the fifth inning. Cali Masters reached base earlier in the inning and later scored on an RBI single from Bianca Polistina to stretch the lead to 4–0.
Bridgeport managed just two hits in the game as Charleston kept the Purple Knights off the scoreboard.
The Golden Eagles closed out the game in the seventh inning to secure the shutout victory.
