Emma Smith Delivers Grand Slam in Regional Opening Win

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. — The University of Charleston softball team opened NCAA Atlantic Regional play with a 9-6 win over Glenville State on Thursday afternoon at Robb Field.

How It Happened:
Charleston got on the board early in the first inning. Bianca Polistina doubled to center field before Taylor Hodson and Danielle Pici drew walks to load the bases. Emma Smith followed with a grand slam to center field to give the Golden Eagles a 4-0 lead. 

The Golden Eagles added two more runs in the second inning. Aubriana Espinoza singled before Polistina added another hit. Hodson drove in a run with a single up the middle while another run scored on a Glenville State error to make it 6-0. 

Glenville State answered in the third inning with a two-run home run from Delany Warnick to cut the lead to 6-2. 

The Pioneers added two more runs in the fourth inning after loading the bases. Shelby McDaniels brought home a run with a single before Warnick drew an RBI walk to make it 6-4. Addison Mass entered in relief and recorded the final two outs of the inning. 

Charleston added another run in the fifth inning. Polistina walked and later moved into scoring position before Danielle Pici singled to right field to score Kayla Moran and extend the lead to 7-4. 

Glenville State again cut into the deficit in the sixth inning with RBI hits from Emily Nolan and Kylee Goodman to make it a one-run game at 7-6. 

The Golden Eagles answered in the seventh inning. Polistina singled before Kayla Moran doubled to right center to bring in a run. Emma Smith later added an RBI single to score Alex Hurley and give Charleston a 9-6 lead. 

Mass closed out the game in the seventh inning to secure the win for Charleston.

Charleston will continue NCAA Atlantic Regional play against Shippensburg on Friday, May 15 at 11 a.m. at Robb Field in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania.
