Golden Eagles Battle Through Final Day of Atlantic Regional

Shippensburg, Pa. – Charleston softball saw its 2026 season come to a close on Saturday afternoon at the NCAA Atlantic Regional Finals, falling to Glenville State in a pair of games at Robb Field. The Golden Eagles dropped the opening game 5-4 before falling 10-7 in the winner-take-all regional final.

Game 1

THE BASICS:
Location: Shippensburg, Pa. (Robb Field)
Score: Glenville State 5, Charleston 4
Records: Charleston 47-17, Glenville State 48-15

How It Happened:
Both teams were kept off the board through the first three innings as Charleston stranded runners in scoring position in both the second and third innings. Glenville State threatened in the second inning with the bases loaded, but the Golden Eagles escaped the jam to keep the game scoreless.

The Pioneers broke through in the bottom of the fourth after a leadoff double and an RBI single through the left side gave Glenville State a 1-0 lead. Charleston nearly answered in the fifth after Maya Hataway singled with two outs, but the inning ended with the Golden Eagles still trailing by one. Glenville State extended the lead in the fifth inning after an error allowed a runner to advance to third before a sacrifice fly and RBI double pushed the score to 3-0.

Charleston responded in the sixth inning. Bianca Polistina reached on an error before Taylor Hodson singled to put two runners on. Kayla Moran drove in the first run of the game for Charleston with an RBI single to left field before Danielle Pici followed with a sacrifice fly to center to cut the deficit to 3-2.

The Pioneers answered immediately in the bottom half of the inning. A walk and single put runners aboard before consecutive RBI singles pushed the Glenville State lead back to three at 5-2 entering the final inning.

Charleston mounted one final rally in the seventh. Caraline Dunn opened the inning with a single before Hataway reached with a bunt single. After Ella Zucchero recorded the first out, Polistina singled to load the bases for Hodson, who ripped a two-run double to left center to bring Charleston within one. Moran later drew a walk to put the tying run aboard, but Glenville State secured the final two outs to escape with the 5-4 victory.

Hodson finished with two hits and two RBIs while Moran added two hits and an RBI. Hataway also recorded two hits in the loss.
 
Game 2

THE BASICS:
Location: Shippensburg, Pa. (Robb Field)
Score: Glenville State 10, Charleston 7
Records: Charleston 47-18, Glenville State 49-15

How It Happened:
Glenville State opened the winner-take-all regional final with three runs in the first inning after an RBI single from Emily Nolan and a two-run single from Hannah Howe gave the Pioneers an early advantage. Charleston answered in the bottom half when Ella Zucchero walked, advanced to third, and later scored on a Kayla Moran RBI fielder's choice to make it 3-1.

The Pioneers added two more runs in the second inning on back-to-back RBI singles to extend the lead to 5-1. Charleston answered again in the bottom of the inning after Caraline Dunn walked and Maya Hataway singled before Zucchero drove in a run with an RBI fielder's choice.

Glenville State continued to build momentum in the third inning after a passed ball moved runners into scoring position before a sacrifice fly and RBI single extended the lead to 7-2. The Pioneers added two more runs in the fourth on an RBI double and RBI single before another run crossed in the fifth on a bases-loaded walk to push the advantage to 10-2.

Charleston continued to fight back in the fifth inning. Hodson doubled to lead off the frame before Moran lined an RBI double down the right field line. Later in the inning, Pici added an RBI single to left center to cut the deficit to 10-4.

The Golden Eagles mounted one final rally in the seventh inning. Pici singled to open the inning before Dunn reached on an error. Aubriana Espinoza followed with an RBI single before Hataway added a bunt single to load the bases. After Glenville State recorded the second out, Hodson lined a two-run single to center field to bring Charleston within three runs, but the comeback attempt ended there as the Pioneers secured the final out to clinch the regional title.

Hodson led Charleston with three hits and two RBIs while Moran finished with three hits and two RBIs. Danielle Pici added two hits and an RBI in the season finale.
