Salem, Va. — The University of Charleston softball team opened the MEC Tournament with a dominant 8-0 win over Davis & Elkins on May 6 at Moyer Sports Complex.

How It Happened:
Both teams were held scoreless through the first two innings before Charleston broke through in the third. Ella Zucchero reached base and later came around to score as Emma Smith delivered a two-RBI single to give the Golden Eagles a 2-0 lead.
Charleston added to its advantage in the fifth inning. Kaleigh Serra drove in a run with a single before Aubriana Espinoza reached on an error that allowed another run to score. Maya Hataway followed with an RBI single to extend the lead to 5-0.
The Golden Eagles put the game away in the sixth inning. After Bianca Polistina reached base and Taylor Hodson worked a walk, Kayla Moran delivered the biggest swing of the day, launching a three-run home run to center field to push the lead to 8-0.
In the circle, Addison Mass was dominant, tossing a complete-game shutout. She allowed just six hits while striking out seven and did not issue a walk, keeping Davis & Elkins off the scoreboard throughout the game.
