Athletic Insurance - Secondary Policy
The Athletic Department maintains a secondary or supplemental insurance policy for intercollegiate student-athletes. Our secondary insurance policy covers medical costs incurred for the care of acute injuries that occur as a direct results of required participation in an intercollegiate activity that is supervised by a recognized member of the University of Charleston coaching staff only.
This secondary insurance policy is not utilized until all applicable medical bills have been submitted to the athlete’s primary insurance. After both the primary insurance has been exhausted the remaining balances may then be submitted to the Athletic Department and accompanied by the primary insurance’s Explanation of Benefits.
The NCAA does not permit UC, or any college or university to provide personal medical coverage, or pay the bills incurred for expenses related to illnesses or conditions which are not sustained as the direct result of an
accident in our intercollegiate sports program.
An accident is defined as an injury which occurs on a specific day during a specific time at an intercollegiate activity that is supervised by a recognized member of the University of Charleston coaching staff.
The University of Charleston and A-G Administrators, Inc. require all athletes to complete the Athlete and Emergency Contact Form each year. Beginning in July 2008, all student-athletes will complete this information online through the SportsWare Homelink. Completed forms as well as current copies of insurance cards must be turned in to the athletic training staff prior to the first team or individual practice or the athlete cannot practice.
Key points to remember:
1. Submit a copy of the front and back of your health insurance card to the athletic trainers at the beginning of each year and anytime the health insurance policy changes; if you do not have your own personal health insurance, contact Student Life about available policies
2. Contact your health insurance provider every August and January to:
a. Inform them you are a full-time college student at the University of Charleston
b. Inform them that your university is located in Charleston, WV and identify if you have coverage in this area
c. Complete any paperwork they require for you to maintain your health insurance while you are attending college.
3. Submit any bills or insurance statements (known as EOBs – Explanation of Benefits) directly related to an athletic injury immediately upon receipt to the Administrative Assistant in the Dept. of Athletics
