Tavon Lawson

Tavon Lawson will be entering his first season with the University of Charleston as an assistant coach for the football program. He will serve as the Safeties Coach and the Director of Football Operations for the upcoming 2024 season.

COACHING HIGHLIGHTS
Lawson previously coached at the high school level for five seasons at various schools in Alabama and Georgia and has sent a total of 18 players to the collegiate level. Notable athletes from his previous years of coaching include Miguel Mitchell and Dallas Young, who went on to play at the University of Arkansas. Kelby Collins and Kenney McShan are two other players that were coached by Lawson who went on to play at the next level, with Collins playing for University of Florida and Kenney McShan signing with the Navy Midshipmen.

PLAYING HIGHLIGHTS
Lawson played his collegiate football the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. He would earn All-SoCon honors as a freshman defensive back in 2014 and once again in 2017 as a linebacker. Within his four years, Lawson and his squad took home the SoCon Championship Title twice in his career, making a substantial impact on defense throughout his career.

After his switch to linebacker at UTC, the Alabama Native led the Mocs in tackling with 35 on the year and 1.5 TFLs, with a single-game and career-record of 14 tackles against Jacksonville State. In 2018, he would match his career-high of 14 tackles against the South Carolina Gamecocks.

While at UTC, Lawson earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology with a focus in sports psychology.
