Steve Frew has been a fixture in the dugout next to Head Coach Michelle Frew having served as her assistant for all but one year of her career. He is the pitching coach for the Golden Eagles. As a pitching coach, Frew has had his pitchers flourish in the circle.
In 2023, his first full year with the pitching staff, the Golden Eagles pitching staff finished with a 1.77 ERA (13th best in the NCAA) and a WHIP of 0.98 (5th best in the NCAA). The staff also twirled 18 shutouts which was the most for the Golden Eagles since the 1981 season.
As the pitching coach at Rollins, since 2006 (16 seasons at Rollins College), the pitching staff has finished with an ERA ranked among the top 10 NCAA schools 13 times including earning the top ranking in the NCAA twice (2011 & 2019).
Numerous pitchers on his staff appeared atop of the NCAA national leader board in multiple categories. In the same span of 16 seasons (2006-21), 14 of his pitchers finished ranked in the national top 10 in ERA. Frew’s ability to develop pitchers can be exemplified throughout his career.
The most recent transformation occurred in 2018. Abby Summers struggled in her first season at Rollins with an ERA of 4.99 while allowing more than a hit an inning, but after Frew incorporated mechanical adjustments, Summers was arguably one of the most dominant pitchers in the country as she finished the season with a 1.15 ERA (NCAA’s 7th best), striking out 10.2 per seven innings (3rd best in the NCAA), and allowed only 2.75 hits per seven innings (Best in the NCAA). Teams only were able to muster a batting average of .115 throughout the season against her.
Over his career, “Coach Steve” has assisted in training players that were honored with 21 All-American awards, 86 regional awards, and 135 conference awards. Frew has also served as the assistant director of Michelle Frew's summer fastpitch camps and clinics for more than two decades. He is also employed by Phoenix Defense as an Integration and Test Lead.
Frew has been developing younger pitchers in camps, clinics, and through pitching lessons for two decades. An active sports enthusiast, Frew has served as an official scorer for the Orlando Rays minor league baseball team and at Walt Disney's Wide World of Sports events including the WNBA. Frew also filled the role of spotter/statistician for Florida Citrus Sports NCAA Bowl Games and the Orlando Predators Arena Football Club.
A 1988 graduate of Eckerd College where he was a pitcher on the baseball team, Frew received a master's degree from Slippery Rock University in 1991 and a doctoral degree in higher education from Nova Southeastern in 2001. Steve and Michelle reside in Charleston and have two children, Erin and Dylan.
