Ryan Arrowood joins the University of Charleston men's basketball staff after six successful seasons as the head coach at his alma mater, the University of Rio Grande, where he established one of the River States Conference's most consistent programs.
During his tenure at Rio Grande, Arrowood compiled a 106-73 overall record, leading the RedStorm to five winning seasons, two NAIA National Tournament appearances, and a River States Conference Coach of the Year honor. Under his leadership, Rio Grande produced three All-Americans, two River States Conference Players of the Year, and consistently competed among the conference's top programs.
Arrowood returned to his alma mater in 2020 after a successful run as the head coach at Teays Valley Christian School in Scott Depot, West Virginia. In five seasons with the Lions, he posted a 102-44 record while building one of the nation's premier prep basketball programs. His teams earned seven victories over nationally ranked opponents and climbed as high as No. 23 in the USA Today Super 25 rankings.
Prior to Teays Valley Christian, Arrowood gained experience at every level of the game. He served as an assistant coach at Rio Grande, where he also led the junior varsity program, spent one season as an assistant coach at Mountain State University, and coached three seasons at nationally renowned Huntington Prep. Throughout his coaching career, Arrowood has helped develop numerous high-level players, including five who have reached the NBA and three McDonald's All-Americans.
A native of Glenwood, West Virginia, Arrowood starred at Hannan High School as a two-time Class A All-State selection and helped lead the Wildcats to the only state semifinal appearance in school history. He was later inducted into the Hannan High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
Arrowood played collegiately at Rio Grande from 2001-06 before beginning his coaching career at his alma mater. He earned bachelor's degrees in Physical Education and Health Education from Rio Grande in 2009 and completed a master's degree in Educational Leadership in 2011.
Arrowood and his wife, Rudi, reside in Hurricane, West Virginia.
