LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Lindsey Kentner made a 3-pointer with 24 seconds remaining in the game to give No. 16 Charleston (W.Va.) a 48-46 win against Northern Kentucky University in the United Electric/Metro Medical Solutions Tip-Off Classic on Friday.
NKU (1-2) had taken a 46-45 lead with 1:46 remaining when Ellen Holton converted a layup. Both teams missed opportunities during the next minute, but Kentner drained a 3-pointer to give Charleston (2-0) the lead with 24 seconds left.
Kentner led the Golden Eagles with 21 points on 8-of-15 shooting, including 5-of-11 from the 3-point arc. She also was honored with the game ball after the contest as she eclipsed the 1,000 point mark for her career in a UC uniform. She now joins a select few in the Charleston record books as she currently sit with 1,014 points.
"Northern Kentucky is traditionally a good team,'' said UC coach Sherry Winn. "They're strong and solid," said Winn. "It was a great victory for us, especially on the road. They shot 18 free throws, and we shot four. That's not to complain about officiating, but they got to the rim and attacked the basket better than we did.
"I thought we played a great game defensively. We did a great job of making them take bad shots, and our defensive pressure was awesome. Their defense is good, too, but we were able to shoot 44 percent from the field, which is the No. 1 reason we won."
The Golden Eagles (2-0) held Northern Kentucky to 31 percent shooting, including 14 percent from 3-point range.
No. 16 ranked Charleston returns to the court in day two of the United Electric/Metro Medical Solutions Tip-Off Classic to face host Bellermine at 7:30 pm in Louisville, Ky.
