JOHNSTOWN, Pa. - Charleston overcame 19 turnovers and less-than-stellar shooting to pick up a 60-47 win on the road at conference opponent Pitt-Johnstown. Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Eagles shot just 38.3 percent from the floor, but shot at a 48 percent clip in the second half.
"It was ugly and I anticipated that it would be ugly,'' said Winn, noting that the Golden Eagles suffered a double-overtime loss at Concord on Thursday and took final exams on Friday. "I told them it was a mental gut check, and they were tough enough to get a win.''
Pitt-Johnstown could not overcome a poor shooting day and 26 turnovers. The Lady Cats shot just 30.4% (17-56) from the field and 5-20 from three-point range. Pitt-Johnstown, which was out-rebounded 41-40, was also 8-12 from the free-throw line.
Charleston shot 38.3% (23-60) from the floor, but just 1-10 from behind the three-point line. The Golden Eagles hit 13-17 from the charity stripe and committed 19 turnovers.
Ali Tobias led Charleston with 12 points followed by Tiana Beatty with 11. Tarena Dixon recorded 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Eagles (5-3 overall, 3-2 WVC).
UC's Lindsey Kentner, who entered the game with a team-leading 21.3 scoring average, scored only four.
"But she didn't hang her head,'' said Winn. "She showed what a good leader she is.''
Charleston continued on to the airport after the game as the team now heads to Hawaii to play in the Hoop-and-Surf Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii this week. The Golden Eagles get back on the court against tournament host Hawaii-Pacific at 3:00 pm HST or 8:00 pm EST on Wednesday, December 15.
