HONOLULU, Hawaii - The University of Charleston women's basketball team held a 46-33 rebounding advantage and shot over 50 percent from beyond the 3-point arc as it earned an 83-71 win over BYU-Hawaii at the Malika Hoop 'N' Surf Classic Thursday in Honolulu.
UC's defense held the Seasiders to 35.7 percent shooting in the first half and built a 15-point lead heading into the break.
A pair of seniors led the way for the Golden Eagles as Lindsey Kentner scored 25 points and recorded eight assists and four steals while Tarena Dixon poured in 21 points and snared 17 rebounds. Kentner was 4-of-4 from 3-point range while Chrissy Keir was 3-for-3 and finished with 14 points.
"It was an ugly game," said UC coach Sherry Winn. "We let them get to within three points with four minutes left in the game. The difference was that we found a way to win. Dixon and Kentner both had good games for us."
Dara Tompkison led all scorers with 27 points for BYU-Hawaii while Erin Dastrup chipped in with 10 points.
Tiani Beatty suffered a turned ankle in Wednesday's game against Hawaii Pacific and did not play against BYU-Hawaii. Winn is optimistic that Beatty can return on Dec. 30 when the Golden Eagles play host to California (Pa.).
