Softball Takes Two From Limestone

GAFFNEY, S.C.—The University of Charleston took two games from Limestone College in softball action on Friday afternoon at Lady Saints Field. UC won game 1 12-4 and got the 1-0 victory in game 2. The Golden Eagles improve to 9-7 overall as the Saints slip to 12-13.

 

GAME 1 (UC 12, LC 4)

The Golden Eagles scored three runs in the top of the second after a homerun from Samantha Marcias (Safford, Ariz.) that scored Micki Murzynsk (Erie, Pa.) and Janeen Vasquez (Cincinnati, Ohio).

 

Limestone answered in the bottom of third as Jenna Guse (Pearland, Texas) doubled and later came home on Kelsey Kuykendall's (Seneca Falls, N.Y.) walk after the bases were loaded. Jordan Smith (Goose Creek, S.C.) scored after Kayla Hamalainen (Surrey, British Columbia, Canada) singled during the next at bat. Lauren Myers (Blackstone, Va.) followed up with a sacrifice fly that scored Mallory Kuykendall (Seneca Falls, N.Y.) to even the score 3-3. Leah Quant (Charlotte, N.C.) drove in the Saints' fourth run with a single that scored Kelsey Kuykendall.

 

The visitors took the 7-4 lead after a grand slam from Jana Salisbury (Winfield, W. Va.) in the fourth inning. Ashlea Wallace (Winfield, W. Va.) later scored on a passed ball. Kath Jo Getz (Revloc, Pa.) came home on a single by Vasquez and Erica Bracey (Elyria, Ohio) scored on a hit from Amber Jarvis (Girard, Ohio).

 

Wallace added a run for UC in the fifth when she scored from second on a single by Getz. Jarvis homered in the sixth inning to increase her team's margin to 8 runs (12-4).

 

Limestone went through four pitchers, with Madison Carpenter (Anderson, S.C.) taking the loss after giving up the game-winning run in the top of the fourth. Jordan Smith (Goose Creek, S.C.) was 2-4 with a run scored and a stolen base. Hamalainen also had a stolen base.

 

Stefanie Rossman (Concord, Ohio) picked up the win as she pitched 5 1/3 innings, giving up 5 hits and 4 earned runs while striking out 5.  Salisbury batted 2-4 with 4 RBIs and a run scored. Vazquez and Jarvis were 2-3 at bat with 2 runs scored apiece. Jarvis drove in one RBI. Rossman hit 1-3 with 3 RBIs. Wallace, Bracey, and Vazquez all had stolen bases.

 

GAME 2 (UC 1, LC 0)

Game 2 was scoreless until the top of the sixth when Bracey's sacrifice hit scored Salisbury from third. Limestone was unable to score a run in the last two innings, and the Golden Eagles recorded three straight outs in the bottom of the seventh for the win.

 

Rossman got her second win of the afternoon as she only gave up four hits and posted a strikeout.

 

Despite having a solid game, Leah Quant (Charlotte, N.C.) took the loss for Limestone. She scattered four hits in a complete game effort while striking out two. Lauren Myers (Blackstone, Va.) led the Saints at the plate as she hit 2-3.
