BLUEFIELD, W.Va. - The University of Charleston women's basketball team picked up another West Virginia Conference win Monday night, winning 74-65 at Bluefield State.
The win marked the fifth straight for the Golden Eagles (14-5 overall, 10-3 WVC) and the ninth out of 10. But coach Sherry Winn was anything but satisfied.
"I have a theory, and the theory goes like this: One game every year you play out of your mind, everything goes in and everything's awesome and perfect; then you have one where nothing happens that can go right. Tonight was that night," Winn said. "We weren't mentally prepared, we looked lost on defense, lost on offense and we couldn't make a basket."
If this was indeed the case, the Eagles picked a good night to have an off night as they handed Bluefield State (1-16, 0-13) its 15th consecutive defeat.
Tarenna Dixon was a bright spot for Charleston, recording 15 points, 11 rebounds and four steals. The senior and Morgantown native also eclipsed the 1,000-point mark for her career.
But Winn insists the objectives for her team weren't met on Monday.
"I was hoping to rest some players and the starters tonight and we just couldn't," Winn said. "I've coached in games like this, I coach one about every year. You're talking to them and they just have a blank look in their eyes like they're not anywhere near the facility. So, thankfully, we got it out of the way."
The Golden Eagles return home for a 6:00 pm matchup against Shepherd on Thursday, January 27.
