CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Tarenna Dixon (Morgantown, W.Va./University) put her 10th double-double in the record books for the 2010-11 season with 20 points and 15 rebounds as she paced the University of Charleston women’s basketball team in a hard-fought 69-58 win over conference for Pitt-Johnstown, Saturday night.
Charleston (16-5, 12-3) shot just 38 percent in the first half as they led from the opening tip, yet managed to build an 11 point advantage in the first seven minutes as UPJ (9-8, 7-6) shot jus t 27 percent from the floor. The Mountain Cats would claw at the UC lead for much of the first half whittling it down to six point with six minutes before halftime, which would hold as the Golden Eagles took a 32-26 lead into the locker room.
In the second half, neither team was able to take a stranglehold on the game as they traded baskets for much of the first ten minutes before leading scorer Andrea Dalton broke loose for Pitt-Johnstown to pull her team within one point with nine minutes to play. The University of Charleston bent but did not break in the face of adversity as UPJ made their comeback as they stood true to using a strong defensive effort to re-assert control of the game. Four turnovers down the stretch forced by the Charleston defense allowed UC to have eight quick points on breakaways and allow the home team to create a comfortable distance with a double-digit lead (12) in the last 1:23 of the contest.
The Golden Eagles shot 40 percent in the second half to secure the 69-58 victory, while a tough perimeter defense held the Mountain Cats to just 16 percent from behind the arc (2-for-12).
Leading scorer Lindsey Kentner (Wapakoneta, Ohio/Wapakoneta) and Tiana Beatty each had double-digit scoring efforts as Kentner finished the night with 17 points and seven rebounds, while Beatty had 16 points, four assists and three steals.
Charleston gets a few days rest as they will play next on the road at Ohio Valley on Thursday, February 3. The Golden Eagles will tipoff against the Fighting Scots at 5:30 pm. UC defeated OVU 91-67 on January 22.
