CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The offensive attack for the University of Charleston volleyball team was running on all cylinders as the Golden Eagles slammed past West Liberty 3-0, Saturday afternoon in WVIAC action.
UC (7-13, 1-2) started the day off on a good note with a .211 hitting percentage by recording 13 kills and just five errors, while their continious attack forced eight WLU (5-9, 2-3) errors as the Golden Eagles cruised to a 25-20 first set victory.
In set number two Charleston again ran out fast as
Lora Goss (Birmingham, AL)dominated the set early to give the home team a 12-7 advantage. Goss sparked the offense for the Golden Eagles to gain a comfortable 21-15 lead and sustain a comeback attempt by the Hilltoppers to book another 25-20 win.
The third set was the most competitive of the contest as West Liberty climbed out to a 13-11 lead utilizing service and attack errors by Charleston. After a timeout by Head Coach Bren Stevens to regroup her team the Golden Eagles returned to their form of the first two sets. The renewed attack allowed UC to slip away from WLU 21-18.
Brenna Youlton (Ontario, Canada ) capped off a great performance with the game winning kill sealing the third 25-20 win on the day to take the team's first conference win of the young 2011 season.
Goss paved the way offensively for UC with 15 kills and three block assists, while
Katie Williams (Gettysburg, PA ) and
Kelsey Eby (Portland, OR) again split time setting the attack with 22 and 20 assists.
The Golden Eagles return to the court at home against WVIAC opponent Concord at 6:00 pm on Wednesday, Oct. 5.
