CHARLESTON, W.Va. -
Lora Goss (Birmingham, AL) put together an offensive show on Friday night in front of a loud crowd at Eddie King Gym as the UC volleyball team used early momentum to upset Seton Hill, who entered the night second in the WVIAC.
Charleston (11-16, 5-5) got the first two points of the night from hard-hitters
Cara Hibbs-Leyva (San Diego, CA ) and
Brenna Youlton (Ontario, Canada ), which would prove to be the most important points of the first set as the two teams traded out points until a 23-23 tie. Seton Hil (21-9, 7-2)l used a timeout to set their offense for what was a pivotal 24th point, but it would go for not.
Kelsey Eby (Portland, OR) and Youlton combined for a block ending the SHU offensive threat and setup the final kill for
Malleri Hardison (Uniontown, PA ) who put the first set away 25-23.
Set two saw UC jump out to an 8-3 advantage behind a four-point serve session by Eby. Just as in the first set the Griffins continued to battle back slowly chipping away at the Golden Eagle advantage until the teams found themselves again knotted at 23-23. In usual fashion Charleston again set Hardison for the important point and yet again she delivered to retake possession.
Ashley Douglas (Ontario, Canada ) put the set away with a well-placed serve short along the left side for the game winning ace.
Seton Hill would not go into the night quietly though as they slammed the ball for an attack percentage over 30 percent in sets three and four to climb back into the contest. Charleston committed 15 errors in the two sets as the Griffins took 25-18 and 25-21 wins.
UC seemed to be just holding on entering the deciding fifth set as SHU seemingly had found their stride with back-to-back wins, but a renewed attack overcame the Golden Eagles to defend their home court. Eby proved to be the difference maker with her serves in game five as she started seven-straight points. The Golden Eagles pushed out to a 12-3 advantage behind three kills each by Hibbs-Leyva and Hardison. Goss, who had quietly put together a great night, booked four kills in the final set and assisted
Keely Latham (Gardnerville, NV) in blocking what would be Seton Hill's final attack to end the contest at 15-8.
On the night, Charleston accounted for 13 blocks as Goss, Youlton and Hardison each tallied solo blocks. Goss led her team on the night with an outstanding 18 kills, five digs and five block assists, while hitting for .455 in the contest. Hibbs-Leyva followed just on her heels with 14 kills in just 25 attempts.
Douglas led the team defensively with 18 digs, while setter
Katie Williams (Gettysburg, PA ) put together a double-double of 29 assists and 16 digs. The two also combined for six service aces in the game.
UC returns to action at home on Monday, Oct. 24 with a 6:00 pm matchup against WVIAC opponent Davis & Elkins.
