CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Despite a gutsy 14 point and 19 rebound effort from
Erika Rousculp (Worthington, OH) the University of Charleston women's basketball team let a late lead slip away as Concord grabbed a 75=63 WVIAC win, Saturday afternoon.
The first half was an even effort as the teams traded nearly shot-for-shot. Both teams hit 42 percent of their attempts in the opening stanza as the West Virginia Conference leading Mountain Lions (8-1, 6-1) took a 37-35 advantage into the locker room.
Concord managed to find their touch in the second half to slowly work away from the Golden Eagles in the first six minutes of the half. The NCAA Division II No. 4 ranked post-player Jolysa Brown laid in a basket at the 14:11 mark handing the visitors a nine-point advantage. That lead would not last for long as a stingy pressure defense from head coach Sherry Winn's crew got the Eddie King Gym crowd back on their feet.
UC (4-4, 3-2) put together a 16-6 run over the next five minutes of play to not just claw back into the contest, but a jumper by
Tiffany Scott (Ottawa Lake, MI) at the 6:31 mark actually gave the Golden Eagles its first advantage of the half (55-54).
The edge would be short lived as Concord showed their experience in regaining their poise to retake a double-digit (55-66) lead with a 12-0 run over the next two minutes. Charleston would be unable to overcome that final blow as Concord hit all the free-throws they needed in the final minute to seal the 75-63 victory.
In what was billed a battle in the post by Brown (ranked No. 3 in NCAA Division II rebounding) and Rousculp (ranked No. 4 in DII rebounding) both put on a show of top-ranked players in the paint. Rousculp led all players with her 19 rebounds, while Brown brought in 14 boards. Both players booked 14 points to record double-doubles in the contest.
For the game Concord outshot UC 44 percent (27-of-61) to 33 percent (23-of-70). Charleston won the battle on the boards to outrebound the Mountain Lions 51-to-45, yet could not overcome 16 turnovers on the afternoon.
Lauren Davis (Cincinnati, OH) paced the Golden Eagles scoring with 15 points and five assists, while Scott rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10.
