Box Score
PHILIPPI, W.Va. - The young squad University of Charleston women's basketball head coach Sherry Winn has assembled continues to play through their growing pains, yet they also continue to find a way to put marks in the win column. The Golden Eagles grabbed their fourth-straight win with a 67-50 decision against Alderson-Broaddus, Saturday evening.
Sophomore commander in the paint
Erika Rousculp (Worthington, OH) paced UC with her fourth double-double of the 2011-12 season as she controlled the glass for 12 rebounds to go along with a team-high 16 points. The game started slow for Charleston as their recent dominance in the paint was not precent from the opening tip at Alderson-Broaddus outrebounded the Golden Eagles to stay within reach in the opening half.
The Battlers hit 4-of-18 three-point attempts, while UC attempted just two shots from behind the arc in the half hitting one. The teams traded punches early with the University of Charleston shooting 40 percent from the floor, yet the three-pointers for A-B forced five ties in the opening stanza sending the teams into the locker room with the score 31-31.
Just as the young team has shown so far this season they learn quickly from first half experiences and the coaching staff implements adjustments to allow a lineup of fresh-faces to succeed. The second half was controlled entirely by a lock-down defensive effort by the Golden Eagles allowing the visitors to run away on the scoreboard.
Freshman
Kayla Dozier (Alpharetta, GA) capped a 12-3 run after halftime with a jumper five minutes into the second half handing Charleston a nine point lead it would not relinquish. UC controlled play under the rim with a 20-8 advantage in points in the paint for the second half as Rousculp and classmate
Tiffany Scott (Ottawa Lake, MI) kept the Battlers at bay on both ends of the court. Scott ended the evening just behind Rousculp with 14 points and five rebounds.
The Golden Eagles hit 45 percent of their shots after halftime, while the visitors' defensive effort held Alderson-Broaddus to just 23 percent from the floor. For the second consecutive contest Charleston's inside game provided plenty of opportunity from the charity stripe with the Golden Eagles hitting 16-of-23 attempts to just 6-of-10 for the Battlers.
Lauren Davis (Cincinnati, OH) rounded out the double-digit scorers for the University of Charleston with 12 points, four rebounds and four assists. UC controlled the ball for the contest with just six turnovers on the night to record the victory.
UC returns to the court on December 17 at home against WVIAC opponent Concord with tipoff set for 2:00 pm.
