FAIRMONT, W.Va. – A solid defensive effort that forced 17 Fairmont State turnovers led to the University of Charleston women’s basketball team notching its 11th straight victory, Thursday night.
Charleston (20-5, 16-3) was led by the senior trio of Lindsey Kentner (Wapakoneta, Ohio/Wapakoneta), Tiana Beatty (Charleston, W.Va./Capital) and Tarenna Dixon (Morgantown, W.Va./University). Kentner paced UC with 16 points and four steals, yet importantly sealed the contest for the Golden Eagles by hitting 4-of-4 free throws in the final minute. Beatty and Dixon each netted 15 points on the night while being key factors in the Golden Eagles owning a 17-7 advantage in second chance points.
Fairmont State (14-10, 11-9) shot 46 percent compared to UC’s 38 percent in the first half, but the visiting teams constant pressure and well executed double-teams under the basket led to a 30-29 Charleston lead at break. The second half again saw the home team shoot better from the floor (47 percent), yet a superb effort at getting to the free throw line made the difference in the game. UC hit 88 percent (15-of-17) of its shots from the charity stripe, while FSU managed 8-of-10.
Leading scorer Kaitlin Snyder paced Fairmont State with 17 points on 5-of-16 shooting, while Lauren Gilbert contributed 16 points. Charleston owned a 30-20 advantage scoring in the paint, yet the Fighting Falcons’ Rachel Murrey put 15 points and 15 rebounds in the scorebook.
UC looks to keep its winning streak alive, along with its place at the top of the West Virginia Conference when the team travels to face Seton Hill at 4:00 pm on Saturday, February 19.
