CHARLESTON, W.Va. – For the second time this season senior Tarenna Dixon (Morgantown, W.Va./University) owned the paint against Concord as she led the University of Charleston women’s basketball team back to the top of the West Virginia Conference with an 80-63 home win.
Earlier this season Dixon torched the Mountain Lions for her best performance of the season with 26 points and 18 rebounds.
Charleston (21-6, 17-4) torched the net with 58 percent shooting in the first half to pull out to a 42-25 halftime advantage in dominant fashion. Dixon and surging newcomer Erika Rousculp (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) were enforcers for much of the contest as they assisted the Golden Eagles in holding a 24-8 scoring differential under the basket in the opening half. Rousculp went on to score a career-high with a 13 point and six rebound effort, while accumulating three steals.
Both teams would level out in the second half as they each put 38 points in the books with Concord (14-11, 11-10) shooting 38 percent (13-of-34) to UC’s 42 percent (14-of-33). The defensive pressure under the basket held the Mountain Lion’s leading scorer Jolysa Brown four points under her season average at 12, while against outscoring the visitors 26-18 in the paint. For the game the Golden Eagles outscored Concord 50-26 in the paint and 22-9 in points off the bench as 10 UC players scored in the contest.
Leading scorer Lindsey Kentner (Wapakoneta, Ohio/Wapakoneta) was the third player for Charleston in double-figures with 15 points, five assists and three blocks.
For the night UC shot 50 percent (32-of-64), while holding Concord to 36 percent (22-of-61) overall.
The win give Charleston control of the top spot in the West Virginia Conference headed into the season finale against WV State on Saturday, February 26 at 2:00 pm.
