Kentner Carries Women's Basketball to 60-55 Win

Box Score

CHARLESTON, W.Va. –
Leading scorer Lindsey Kentner (Wapakoneta, Ohio/Wapakoneta) took the University of Charleston women’s basketball team on her shoulders with 22 points, five steals and four blocks as she led the West Virginia Conference’s hottest team to a 60-55 win over Davis & Elkins, Saturday night.

Charleston (18-5, 14-3) shot under 40 percent for the second straight contest, yet managed to do just enough to improve their home record to 10-0 and their overall winning streak to nine games.

Davis and Elkins (5-17, 3-13) was unable to take advantage of an off night for the Golden Eagles as their shooting touch was also nowhere to be found with just a 25 percent effort in the opening half. Neither team exerted control of the contest early as they traded leads for the first 12 minutes of the game.

As the clock ticked to 8:37 before the break, Kentner curled around a high screen to hit a patented three-pointer to start what would become a 15-0 run for UC to run out to a 16 point lead. The Charleston run allowed the home team to take a comfortable 33-20 advantage in the locker room.

The second half saw the University of Charleston continue to take advantage of their one shooting-streak to continue holding a consistent 13-to-16 point lead for much of the closing half. The teams traded baskets with D&E seemingly unable to make any headway into the deficit, yet with 2:20 left in the game Heach Coach Jason Abell breathed some life into his team.

The Senators clawed their way back into the game by hitting 5-of-8 trays down the stretch to turn what was a 19-point Golden Eagle lead into a three point contest with 29 seconds remaining. Davis & Elkins shot 40 percent to make their comeback, while holding UC to just 28 percent from the floor. Kentner sealed the deal for Charleston by hitting 5-of-6 attempts from the foul line over the final 20 seconds as the Golden Eagles held on for a final score of 60-55.

Senior Tarenna Dixon (Morgantown, W.Va./University) was the only played beyond Kentner with double-digit scoring for UC as she netted 12 points and seven rebounds, while accounting for three blocks and two steals. Freshman post-player Erika Rousculp (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) assisted Dixon in controlling the paint as she pulled down nine rebounds in the game.

The University of Charleston heads into its conference bye week and will get plenty of rest before facing off against WVIAC contender Glenville State on Saturday, February 12 at 6:00 pm in Eddie King Gym.
