CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The startup University of Charleston women's golf team got its first taste of action as it hit the links for the first time in program history over the weekend in the Mercyhurst Fall Invitational in Erie, Pa.
Allison Strider led the way for the Golden Eagles with a 41st-place finish as she shot a strong 91 in the second round to build off an opening round of 102. The team will continue to build off its first taste of competition as Kimberly Key, Elizabeth Austin and Emily Griffith rounded out the scoring for UC, which finished in ninth place for the tournament.
"I'm proud of the ladies, they came out and got a good idea of where we need to improve to compete within the region." said head coach Jim Jamieson "The more they can get on the course they will continue to improve and grow, which will help to get this program headed in the right direction."
Walsh University posted the top score in the tournament shooting back-to-back rounds of 315 to edge WVIAC leader Wheeling Jesuit by six shots. Caitlin Kempton of Mercyhurst recorded the top individual score at 150 for the two-day event.
The Golden Eagles will continue their fall schedule on Sept. 23 as they travel to the DePauw Small College Invitational in Clayton, Ind.
