Box Score
CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The University of Charleston men's soccer team outplayed visiting Malone with 22 shots to the visitors seven, but it was the Pioneers only shot in overtime that lifted them to a 2-1 victory.
The two teams battled hard with much of the game being played with the powerful UC offense controlling the tempo, yet the Malone defensive line held strong to keep the visitors in the game. The MU offense was not able to get much traction against a faster Golden Eagle squad, yet they made every opportunity they received count.
Kelvin Aquino marked the scoreboard first in the 76th minute as he nailed a shot towards goal that slipped past Charleston goalkeeper Sean Teepen on a deflection in front of the net. The visitors were content with trying to just keep UC off the scoreboard and conceded possession by leaving just one player in the front of the field to allow a deep defensive setup.
Despite playing against vitually 10 defenders
Harry Machacha (Germiston, South Africa) managed to make a slick move past the right side of the defense to find himself one on one with the Pioneer goalkeeper with just over six minutes remaining in the contest. Machacha fired a laser past Felipe Monteiro to deadlock the game and send the teams into overtime.
Both teams came out of the break before overtime with high confidence and the aggressive Charleston attack allowed Malone to play a long ball to Felipe Delgado who was sprinting down the middle of the field just three minutes into the extra period. UC's defensive line tried to push Delgado off the long ball, yet were unable to deter his attempt which managed to just float over a charging Teepen and into the back of the net to seal the victory for Malone.
Monteiro kept his team within striking distance all night with eight saves, while Teepen finished the contest with two.
Charleston will look to rebound against conference opponent Seton Hill at home on Saturday, Sept. 24 at 6:00 pm.
