Box Score
CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Lauren Davis (Cincinnati, OH) drained a fade-away along the baseline as time expired to lift the University of Charleston women's basketball team over the NCAA Division II scoring leaders from Glenville State 86-84, Monday evening in Eddie King Gym.

The Pioneers (8-4, 6-2) entered the contest leading the country at 97.9 points per game and second in Division II in three-point field goals per game at 11.1.

A youthful Golden Eagles (5-7, 4-4) squad controlled the pace of the contest from the opening tip, easily breaking the GSU fullcourt press leading to breakaway points for much of the contest. UC countered the multiple waves of fresh legs Glenville State substituted every few minutes with a 10 person rotation of their own.

Glenville State was forced to settle for outside shots as the Golden Eagles controlled the lane with the inside combo of Erika Rousculp (Worthington, OH) and Kali Cuttaia (Eden, NC). Charleston forced GSU to shoot just 34 percent, while holding the visitors to 6-of-26 from behind the three-point line allowing the hot shooting (20-of-34) Golden Eagles to keep pace on the scoreboard.  Tiffany Scott (Ottawa Lake, MI), making just her third career start, came out of the gate strong attacking the basket for easy baskets to net 10 points in the first half and keep UC within 50-49 at halftime.

The second half saw Charleston stick to their pinpoint attack to cut the Pioneer press, while owning the glass and presence in the paint. Rousculp entered the night ranked second in NCAA Division II in rebounding and showed why with an impressive 10 rebound performance in the second half. The Cuttaia and Rousculp duo racked up 15 rebounds in the second stanza, while continuing to force the Glenville State offense outside where they shot just 23 percent.

Tough defense and a scorching hot offense kept Charleston within reach in the second before a Davis layup with 6:08 remaining put the home team ahead 74-73. The teams traded baskets to an 84-84 deadlock with 2:08 left to play before the defenses stepped up to put a halt on the scoring. Both teams traded turnovers on consecutive possessions before each missing point blank go-ahead shots to set up a final Charleston possession with 18 clicks left.

Point guard Chrissy Keir (Savreville, NJ) cut through the press as she had flawlessly all game long to setup the final look for UC. Keir's first pass was denied entry before a ball reversal allowed Davis to gain control along the baseline with the clock clicking under five seconds. Davis took the ball to the edge of the paint before running into a logjam of opposition. Davis took two immediate steps back from the basket lofting a fade-away over two GSU defenders. The floater layed on the front edge of the rim before slipping through the net as the buzzer rang to snap Charleston's four-game skid and seal the 86-84 upset.

"It was such a great win for us against a really great team," said UC coach Sherry Winn. "It's a real confidence booster."

Davis paced the University of Charleston with 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting with Scott following closely behind at 12 points and three blocks. Keir came up big with 11 points on a perfect 4-of-4 shooting, but most importantly slashed the full-court press all evening without committing a turnover. First year players LeAnne Ross (Marietta, OH) and Cuttaia rounded out the double-digit scorers at 10 points apiece.

Rousculp continued to be dominant on the boards with an impressive 17 rebound performance to go along with eight points.

Charleston hopes to continue their growth as WVIAC play continues on the road against Wheeling Jesuit at 5:15 pm on Thursday, Jan. 12. Live audio coverage of the contest against the Cardinals will be available here at www.ucgoldeneagles.com
