CHARLESTON, W.Va. -
Erika Rousculp (Worthington, OH) continued to show why she is ranked as one of the top post players in all Division II, but her 19 points and 15 rebounds were not enough to overcome an 18-point halftime deficit against WV Wesleyan, Wednesday afternoon.
Rousculp came into the contest ranked second in the nation in rebounds with a 13.5 rebound per game average.
Charleston (4-6, 3-3) could not get the ball rolling after the opening tip on either side of the ball. The Golden Eagle defense surrendered 20 baskets and allowed the Bobcats (7-3, 4-1) to torch the net at 59 percent from the floor. UC had little answer on the offensive side of the ball shooting just 36 percent including just 1-of-6 from behind the arc before the halftime break. WV Wesleyan used the momentum to pull out to a 48-30 lead at break.
In the second half the Golden Eagles emerged from the locker room with a renewed energy to crawl back in the game. UC cut the deficit to just 10 points mid-way through the final stanza, but would be unable to overcome the first half hole.
The University of Charleston outscorer WV Wesleyan 46-42 in the second half as they shot an improved 46 percent from the field.
Rousculp's double-double was the offensive highlight for the young UC team that had nine players put marks in the scorebook. Leading scorer
Lauren Davis (Cincinnati, OH) and freshman
Kayla Dozier (Alpharetta, GA) each netted nine points in on the afternoon followed closely by
Chrissy Keir (Savreville, NJ) and
Tiffany Scott (Ottawa Lake, MI) at eight points apiece.
UC gets back on the court on Saturday, Jan. 7 with a 4:00 pm matchup at West Virginia Conference opponent Seton Hill.
