CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Victoria Severo (Meadville, PA) and
Katharine Furlong (Sedona, AZ) each booked double-digit kills to lead the University of Charleston volleyball team to a 3-0 victory over conference opponent Glenville State, Wednesday evening.
Charleston fired out of the gate with a hitting percentage of .286 to book 15 kills to only five errors as they ran out to a 19-9 advantage and never looked back. Back-to-back kills by Furlong combined with two-consecutive service aces by
Melissa Reyes (Lima, Peru) to put the set away for the Golden Eagles convincingly at 25-13.
GSU managed their best effort in set two with a hitting percentage of .080, while UC stayed hot at .250. A pair of kills by
Breanna Hughes (Hurricane, WV) broke a 6-6 deadlock to allow the University of Charleston to pull away over the next ten points.
Malleri Hardison (Uniontown, PA) was the charm Charleston needed at the service line with six-straight efforts allowing the home squad to take over the set for the 25-19 win.
The Golden Eagles ran out to a 10-5 lead in the final set to grab early breathing space as they put the match away. Furlong started the final point stretch with a service ace, her third of the contest, to put Charleston ahead 21-13 which held strong until a
Ashley Douglas (Amherstburg, Canada) ace booked the 25th point of the set.
On the evening, Severo paced a strong offensive effort by UC with 12 kills in only 17 attempts for a .647 hitting percentage. Furlong followed just behind with 10 kills, Douglas was the defensive leader with nine digs.
Charleston hits the road for their next contest as the team travels to Cedarville (Ohio) for a 1:00 pm game on Saturday, Oct. 27.
