Men's Soccer Advances to WVIAC Championship

Alex Martinez-Gallardo
Box Score
CHARLESTON, W.Va. - It took a pair of second half goals to secure it, yet the University of Charleston men's soccer team is headed to the 2012 WVIAC Tournament Championship game looking for their fourth-straight title with a 3-0 win over Shepherd in the semifinal round, Saturday afternoon.

Alexander Martinez-Gallardo (Vancouver, Canada) gave No. 4 ranked Charleston (13-1-3) the early breathing space it needed to keep the offense from getting out of form. Martinez-Gallardo found the back of the net when Ceth Locklear (Magnolia, TX ) sent a perfectly placed long ball from nearly 40-yards out that landed right in front of the Ram goalkeeper. Martinez-Gallardo collected the pass with a strong first touch between defenders before placing the ball between the posts for a 1-0 lead.

Shepherd put up a fight against the strong UC defense as they tried to claw back into the game by keeping the shot count close as the home squad held a narrow 6-4 advantage headed into halftime. Afte halftime though head coach Chris Grassie ask his team to get the ball moving and it turned into look-after-look for the Golden Eagles.

In the 71st minute, Nathan Schmitt (Muskegon, MI) opened the game up for the University of Charleston with a one-timer off a pin-point pass from Renan Ramos (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) to make the score 2-0. The game was sealed just over ten minutes later when a deflection around midfield allowed UC to have numbers deep in Shepherd territory, which Lewis Osborne (Wakefield, England) made count. Osborne collected a pass from Michael Hagarty (Wellington, New Zealand) in front of the goal and placed it into the back of the net for his third score of the season.

With the win Charleston advances to the 1:00 pm West Virginia Conference championship game against No. 2 seed Davis & Elkins at Schoenbaum Stadium. UC won the regular season matchup between the two teams 1-0.
