CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The University of Charleston went cold in the second half as Davis & Elkins pulled away in the final 10 minutes for a 69-57 victory over the Golden Eagles, Monday evening.
The first half was tightly contested with neither team showing the ability to runaway on the scoreboard as UC shot only 34 percent to the Senators' 37 percent effort. The Golden Eagles made up the difference in shooting by capitalizing for nine points created off D&E turnovers as the visitors struggled early to find the open player.
In the first 20 minutes of play the game was tied five times with seven different lead changes, the largest of which was a three point differiential with just under a minute remaining in the half. Charleston slipped into the locker room at half with a narrow 30-29 edge.
After the first half performance it seemed to setup perfectly for the Golden Eagles who so far this season have been a dramatically better second half squad. A second half surge was not to be though as it was Davis & Elkins who's adjustments created space on the scoreboard.
D&E used their drastically larger line-up for most of the final 20 minutes of play to exploit the small guard oriented University of Charleston line-up. The Senators pounded the ball into the paint on nearly every trip down the floor accounting for 22 points in the second half underneath. Point-blank looks at the rim allowed Davis & Elkins to hit 14-of-28 second half shots as they slowly took charge of the contest with each trip down the floor.
Poor shooting continued for Charleston as they tried in every way they could to hang in the game, yet a 29 percent shooting effort did little to slow D&E from closing the game. UC fought hard for the duration of the game; keeping the game within reach until just two minutes left to play when desperation from three-point land allowed the visitors to hold a double-digit lead for a 69-57 decision.
Davis & Elkins held a 47-36 advantage on the boards, while UC forced 19 turnovers on the evening.
LeAnne Ross (Marietta, OH) was the only Golden Eagle to score double-digit points with 10 with
Chelsea Chambers (Columbus, OH) following just behind with a career-high nine points.
The Golden Eagles get an extended break for the holidays before hitting the court next on January 3 when they hit the road for a trip to WVIAC opponent Concord.
