Women's Basketball Comeback Falls Short

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The University of Charleston women's basketball team made a fierce comeback late in the second half but were unable to overcome a late double-digit deficit against visiting Fairmont State.

The Golden Eagles (11-12, 10-9) cut the Fairmont lead from 13 points to four with 3:20 left in the fourth quarter, but couldn't get any closer as Fighting Falcons leading-scorer Kaitlin Snyder went 5-for-6 from the free throw line in the last minute of the game.

"I'm glad we cut it back, but we're not smart enough to make the right plays or we don't have the confidence to make the right plays," said UC coach Sherry Winn. "We're not experienced enough at the end of games to make the right decisions."

UC outscored FSU 39-38 after halftime, but it was a flurry of points by the Fighting Falcons in the minute just before the break that set the difference (32-24) going into the locker room. That first stanza lead would be enough to propel Fairmont State headed into the second.

On the evening FSU managed 12 steals to just four by the home team, while the Fighting Falcons finished the night hitting 41 percent of their shots to Charleston's 38 percent.

Erika Rousculp (Worthington, OH) led UC with 23 points, while Lauren Davis (Cincinnati, OH) added 17 and Chrissy Keir (Savreville, NJ) 10. Rousculp, the NCAA Division II rebounding leader (13.8 per game), corralled 18 boards in the contest.
