CHARLESTON, W.Va. -
Chrissy Keir (Savreville, NJ) made just one three-pointer in the game, but she delivered when it was needed most as Charleston went down to the final ticks of the clock in a 64-62 win over Seton Hill, Saturday.
The Griffins (10-16, 9-11) made a comeback run over the final three minutes of play capped by a contested three-pointer from leading scorer Paiga Alviani that knotted the game with just 1:30 remaining.
Charleston (12-12, 11-9) briefly retook the lead just 15 seconds later on a pair of free throws by
Lauren Davis (Cincinnati, OH), which led to an immediate Seton Hill timeout. Coming out of the break it was clear who would have the ball and despite constant pressure from the UC defense Alviani again found herself with just enough room to toss up a long-ball. She managed to get enough of the front rim to net the points and give the visitors a one-point lead with 38 ticks left to play.
Coming off a timeout of their own the Golden Eagles seemed to be clearing the paint for post-power
Erika Rousculp (Worthington, OH) who had found success for the duration of the contest under the hoop. Rousculp was cut off by the tight defensive pressure of the Griffins as the ball worked its way around the perimeter making multiple passes. Keir found herself with the ball and seemingly nowhere to go and made the instant decision to show her range. The ball took a slow-motion trajectory to the basket, but slipped through the net to allow Charleston to escape with the 64-62 victory.
UC outshot SHU 41 percent to 39 percent from the floor, but the Griffins proved to be deadly from long-range as they nailed 11 shots from behind the arc to stay within reach for the duration of the game.
Rousculp, the NCAA Division II rebounding leader, booked a double-double of 14 points and 15 rebounds to pace Charleston offensively. Keir followed close behind with 13 points, but none more important than the final three.
LeAnne Ross (Marietta, OH) hit 3-of-6 shot from three-point land to round out the double-figure scorers with 10.
The University of Charleston bench outscored Seton Hill's bench 19-to-5 in the game.
