Erika Rousculp (Worthington, OH) booked a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds in leading the University of Charleston women's basketball team to a 56-51 upset of Pitt-Johnstown in the opening round of the West Virginia Conference Tournament, Monday night.
Neither team set the nets on fire in the opening half as Charleston (13-14) shot just 34 percent from the floor, while the home standing Mountain Cats (14-13) shot a bit better at 40 percent with three shots from behind the arc. UPJ took a five-point advantage (33-28) into the locker room at halftime.
UC stayed on course in the second half hitting 33 percent of their shots, but stepped up the defensive pressure to allow Pitt-Johnstown no clean looks at the rim as the home team managed just 18 percent from the floor.
Rousculp led an inside game that allowed the University of Charleston to control the paint and quickly erase the halftime deficit. The Golden Eagles outscored UPJ 14-4 in the paint for the second half as the visitors grabbed a late lead and held on for their tournament life.
Lauren Davis (Cincinnati, OH) led the way for the University of Charlston on the offensive end with a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman
Kayla Dozier (Alpharetta, GA) had her third double-digit scoring effort of the season with 10 points on 5-of-8 shooting in 18 minutes of action.
The win lifts UC into the second round of the WVIAC Tournament at the Civic Center with their next matchup against No. 2 seeded Concord at 8:30 pm on Wednesday, Feb. 29.
