Box Score Athens, W.Va. - University of Charleston's didn't need a lot of time to adjust to the bad pitch conditions at Concord University on late Tuesday afternoon in Athens, WV. It took 11 minutes for Golden Eagles to find their rhythm, establish the possession, and put significant pressure on Mountain Lions. A great combination play on top of Concord's 18 yard box set Kody Harrell for an excellent shot which resulted in a 1:0 lead for Charleston.
Concord was able to respond soon after when Ryan Forde used the miscommunication in Charleston's defense to his advantage and was left alone with Golden Eagles' goalkeeper Justin Bryant. Fortunately for Charleston Forde's shot hit the side net of Bryant's goal. The rest of the first half both teams spent battling in the midfield without any dangers for either of the goalkeepers.
Second half brought a little bit more action on both sides. In the 52
nd minute Osborne tried to cross a ball inside the Mountain Lion's box which resulted in a penalty for Golden Eagles. Conor Branson stepped to the task and converted the 12 yard shot to secure Charleston's 2:0 lead. The offensive didn't stop here as chances kept coming one after another for both teams.
Jules Gabbiadini and Lewis Osborne were Charleston's most dangerous players while Ryan Forde kept trying to find his luck on the day for Concord. Mitchell Thompson was forced to make 5 out of his 7 saves for Mountain Lions in the second half. Concord's Patrick Ebbs was denied by Justin Bryant late in the game to keep the scoreboard unchanged.
The Golden Eagles will face WV Wesleyan University at home on Saturday night. The UC men kick off at 7pm at Schoenbaum Stadium in Coonskin Park.
